Tens of athletes of the first size apply for trophies of the 108th edition. Who will succeed in the end?

The men’s doubles category prize claims many superstars like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. And these are only the most famous names! Marin Cilic, Alexander Zverev, David Goffin, and others may also encroach on the title. In general, the competition is huge!

In the last edition of the championship, the Swiss Roger Federer was the best. A star veteran does not think to give way to the young. Can he repeat last year’s success?

In the women’s single category the matters are not easy. There are many worthy tennis players, but there is no definite leader. Until recently, Serena Williams was such a leader. But the titled American “went on maternity leave,” and it is unclear whether she can recover at the start of the tournament.

In addition, prizes will be played in doubles and mixes. It will also be interesting to watch matches in these categories. However, they are not as prestigious as fights in other disciplines.

There is something for everyone as far as the Australian Open is concerned. It features events for men’s singles, women’s singles, Junior’s Championships, and mixed doubles.

Tennis fans are well catered to during Australian Open dates since the sport is telecast throughout the world on many networks. Melbourne Park has become synonymous when it comes to the Australian Open, but there was a danger of the location being shifted due to a lack of facilities. A whopping $363 million project has ensured that this iconic location will serve as the home of Australia tennis open and Melbourne tennis until 2036.

Armed with a history going back to 1905, the Australian Open sets things going as far as the entire tennis season is concerned. A unique aspect of this event is the blue Plexicushion surface, which has been in use since 2008. Incidentally, the Melbourne Open relied upon the grass as its surface up until 1988. It has to be said that the switch to a blue Plexicushion surface lends a great attraction to the ATP Australian Open.

Growth in Popularity

One of the primary factors that determine the popularity of a tournament is attendance. In this regard, only the U.S. Open is better than the Australian Open. After bringing in more than 700,000 visitors for the first time in 2015, the tennis Australian Open is expected to cross the 720,000 figure in 2020. Almost a quarter of a million people putting up the query of ‘when is Australian Open?’ is a great testament to the success of the tournament.

Angelique Kerber - 2016 Australian Open Champion

It is not a surprise that a tournament is popular if its location is good. Melbourne Park has been the location since 1988 and the convenience offered by this facility on all aspects like location and viewership has been a major factor. Melbourne Park is one of the few places that allow indoor play whenever the weather is not conducive for this major event due to aspects like the hot or wet weather.

Successful Stars

Australian Open winners are in plenty, but only two have been extremely successful. The duo of Roy Emerson and Novak Djokovic has six titles each from the Australian Open men’s final. Adrian Quist has the most number of doubles titles – 10. Margaret Court is the most successful women’s player with 11 titles in the Australian Open finals and Thelma Coyne Long has 12 double’s titles. Australian tennis has grown immensely – buoyed by the success of the Grand Slam – in the last few decades.

Prize Money

Just like some of the recent changes made to Grand Slam events, prize money for the Australian Open Women Championships is on par with the men’s game. Open Australia offers prize money of $3.1 million for the champions, while the runner-up in each competition on the new casino sites receives $1.55 million.

Australian Open 2018

The 2018 edition of the tournament took place between January 15 to 28. The tournament set a new record for the number of visitors, as just over 720,000 were in attendance. This was only the second year in which the Australian Open had a record attendance figure of more than 700,000. Novak Djokovic was coming into the Australian Tennis Open as one of the most successful players in its history. He had a chance to equal Roy Emerson’s record of six titles. The major talking point ahead of the Melbourne Open was if he could win this record-equalling title or would the wait go on.

In the women’s game, Serena Williams was at her dominating best in the 2015 edition. She was a favourite to retain the title, which could have been her seventh tennis Australian Open title.

The men’s singles final turned out to be another affair between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. The duo had already met up with each other on 30 different occasions with Djokovic coming out successful in 21. The overwhelming statistic in favour of the Serbian put him as the bookies favourite for the ATP Australian Open 2018. Murray and Djokovic did not have much resistance coming into the finals. Milos Raonic and Roger Federer were comfortably dealt with in the semifinals.

After an extremely comfortable first set victory, Murray put up a fight back. Djokovic, though, eased to a 6–1, 7–5, 7–6 win. It brought him a record-equalling sixth medal and he once again joined the list of Australian Open Champions.

Serena Williams, though, was unable to defend her title in the women’s single. She ended up losing 6–4, 3–6, 6–4 to Angelique Kerber.

Almost a quarter of a million people putting up the query of ‘when is the Australian Open?’ is a great testament to the success of the more chilli tournament. Join today to oddsdigger.com for top online tennis betting on all markets.
